The Yelland and Papps story perhaps doesn’t fit in with the usual line spun by wineries in the Barossa - six generations of this, five generations of that. It is a story about new beginnings, a story about a young couple, with a young family, forging their own path within a wine region as first generation...

The brothers in question (brothers of famed chef and author Maggie Beer) are Colin and Bruce, the latter of whom became a partner in the grapegrowing business in 1987. Ten years later they decided to venture into winemaking, using the team at Yalumba (to whom they sell the lions share of the grape production); after selling some of the 40-year-old Barossa shiraz to Rockford for inclusion in the Basket Press Red, they persuaded Dave Powell to make Old Vine Barossa Shiraz.

An institution in any Barossa household, the cellar is where you will find all of the latest release vintages...

There is no other single winery brand in the New, or the Old,World with the depth and breadth of Penfolds. Retail prices range from less than $20 to $785 for Grange, which is the cornerstone, produced every year, albeit with the volume determined by the quality of the vintage, not by cash flow. There is now a range of regional wines with single varieties, and the Bin Range of wines that include both regional blends and (in some instances) varietal blends. Despite the very successful Yattarna and Reserve Bin A Chardonnays, and some impressive Rieslings, this remains a red wine producer at...

Jacobs Creek is one of the largest-selling brands in the world, and the global success of the base range has had the perverse effect of prejudicing many critics and wine writers who fail (so it seems) to objectively look behind the label and taste what is in fact in the glass. Jacobs Creek has multiple ranges, and all the wines have a connection, direct or indirect, with Johann Gramp, who built his tiny stone winery on the banks of the creek in 1847. The ranges include Heritage (Johann Shiraz Cabernet, Steingarten Riesling, Reeves Point Chardonnay and Centenary Hill Barossa Shiraz); then...

Their vineyards contain the following varietals: Shiraz (70%), Grenache (17%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), Zinfandel (2%), and a small parcel of Viognier (1%). Blocks were carefully selected for orientation and aspect with different clonal material used according to suitability. The depth and complexity of their wines arises from the great variety of terroirs at Hentley Farm, created by the diversity within the 150 acre estate’s east and west facing slopes and altitude variances. Subsoils of tightly structured friable clay offer huge water holding potential, offering respite for their vines...

The wines are made from hand-picked grapes, basket-pressed, and are neither fined nor filtered. The establishment date of Turkey Flat is given as 1990 but it might equally have been 1870 (or thereabouts), when the Schulz family purchased the Turkey Flat vineyard, or 1847, when the vineyard was first planted to the very old shiraz that still grows there today alongside 8ha of equally old grenache. Plantings have since expanded significantly, now comprising shiraz (24ha), grenache (10.5ha), cabernet sauvignon (5.9ha), mourvedre (3.7ha), and smaller plantings of marsanne, viognier and dolcetto.
