Description

A Cuban variation of French toast - very sweet with a zesty syrup

Main Ingredient Bread

Ingredients

  • 6-8 thick slices of stale (hard) white bread or sliced French baguette cut 1 inch ( 2.5 cm ) thick.
  • 4 whole eggs
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup evap. milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tspn grated nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  •  Powdered (Icing) sugar -optional

Syrup

  • 1/2 tspn vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup water
  • zest of lemon

Instructions

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 350 F (180 C)
  2. 1 Beat the eggs yolks in a large bowl ,mix in the sugar,vanilla,nutmeg, cinnamon & milk
  3. 2 In a separate bowl beat the 4 whole eggs
  4. 3  Place some greased baking paper on an oven tray
  5. 4 Once oven has reached desired temperature dip each bread slice in the first bowl, shake off any excess mixture & dip in second bowl
  6. 5 Bake for 10 minutes until golden brown
  7. 6 While bead is cooking prepare syrup by mixing all ingredients in a small saucepan & warm gently
  8. 7  When bread is cooked remove from oven. Place on serving plates, pour syrup on top and sprinkle with powdered/icing sugar
