Traditional beef pie with the national drink - Guinness

Cooking time 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 hours
Main Ingredient Beef


 1 kg (2 pounds) round (chuck) steak cubed into bite sized pieces

 1 Tbsp Flour seasoned with salt & pepper to taste

 1 tsp Brown sugar

 5  medium  onions - chopped

 300 ml Guinness

 8 Slices bacon chopped small

 3 oz (85 gms.) Lard or butter

 Chopped parsley

2 sheets of  short pastry


1 Line a deep pie dish with a layer of pastry & blind bake until light golden

2 Preheat oven to 325 F (165 C)

3 Roll the steak pieces in the seasoned flour & brown in the lard/butter together with the bacon

4 Fry the onions until golden brown

5  Place the meat in a casserole dish and add the onions, Guinness, brown sugar.

6 Cover & simmer for 2 1/2 hours or until meat is tender. Stirring occasionally.

7 If the gravy becomes too thick add more Guinness or water

8 Pour mixture into prepared pie dish, cover with pastry shhet and bake until crust become medium brown, about 10 minutes

9 Serve with a generous portion of mashed potatoes (or Dublin potato cake) & peas
