Traditional Apple Pie (using frozen pastry)

Main Ingredient Apples


8 medium cooking apples of choice such as red delicious

1/3cup castor sugar

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup self-raising flower

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

pinch of salt

2 tbs butter

2 sheets frozen puff pastry


1 Preheat oven to 220 C (430 F)

2 Peel & core apples. Slice to even thickness

3 In a large bowl mix the sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and flour

4 Stir in the apples - mix well

5 Grease a deep pie tin and line with one sheet of thawed puff pastry. Dot with butter

6 Cover filled pie tin with remaining pastry sheet. Both pastry sheets should be about inch above filling inside tin. Press together to seal the edges

7 Any excess pastry can be used to decorate the top

8 Make a few slits in the top pastry 

9 Cover the edge with a thin strip of foil to prevent burning

10  Cook for 45 - 50 minutes until juice bubbles through slits
