Guatemalan  food and drink is characterized by having diverse flavors, whose origin is a mix between Mayan (indiginious) and Spanish cuisines. Families prepare each of the traditional meals with a special flavor and aroma, which together form the delicious Guatemalan cuisine.

Guatemala breakfasts are simple, typically including an assortment of eggs, tortillas, beans and plantains. Many breakfasts in Guatemala take advantage of the country's abundant tropical fruits, like bananas, papaya, mangoes, and avocado. And of course. No Guatemala breakfast is complete without  the world-class Guatemalan coffee.

Lunch and dinner also revolve around tortillas, rice and refried beans. Various additions of meats and vegetables round out the meal. Chicken and beef are the country's most popular meats,

Corn, beans, rice, cheese and tortillas form the backbone of most Guatemalan cuisine. Meat stews (caldos) and soups (sopas) are also popular dishes.

Guatemala has some distinctive beverages. Locals typically prepare their coffee weak and sweet with a little milk. Fruit juices abound, featuring fresh concentrate mixed with water or milk.

Many meals in Guatemalan have similarities to those of Mexico, Guatemala's neighbor to the north. Guatemala food such as nachos, tamales and enchiladas are just as delicious as you'll find in your favorite Mexican restaurant – and much cheaper. Chinese food restaurants and fried chicken stands are also quite common in Guatemala cities

There is a wide variety of delicious sweets, such as "canillas de leche", a caramel which takes up to three hours to be prepared; the "cocadas", baked coconut dough and milk. The "paciencias" are crispy delicacies made with egg whites, flour, sugar, and lemon, shaped as cookies that are dry inside and usually melts in the mouth.
