We all want shining healthy hair as it is one of the hallmarks of youth, but unfortunately every day the hair goes through damage which takes away your hairs lustre and bounce.
One of the most damaging procedures done to the hair is colouring; which includes bleaching, perms and highlighting. This is because when you alter you hair you change the structure of your hair making it weaker and more susceptible to damage, and over time your hair looks lacklustre and brittle.
Another procedure that damages the hair is using a flat iron or blow dry as it can lead to dry and dull looking hair as well as split ends. This is due to the water under the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair) forming bubbles under the hair because of the heat. The bubbles then stress and break the hair, which causes the split ends.
A few lesser known hair damagers is over – brushing and over – shampooing. We all know the old adage of 100 brush strokes for beautiful hair, but in actual fact too much brushing causes breakage and split ends along due too much consistent friction for the hair to handle. Over shampooing the hair can cause the hairs natural moistening factors to be removed which cause your hair to be dry and more susceptible to breakage.
When it comes to your hair a good rule of thumb is: the less you do the better. The good news is that no matter how damaged your hair is there are so many products out on the market that can repair your hair. A good idea is to use a hydrating shampoo and a deep hydrating conditioner to minimise the amount of natural moisturising factors lost during shampooing. To limit the damage done by heat it’s a good idea to use a heat protector before flat ironing and blow drying.
