This is the spot if you're Puerto Rican and you need any of the food you grew up with. They have all the ingredients, which is great, but then they also have pre-made things like sofrito and pastele. This store is smaller than your average grocer, however it is very affordable, clean & everyone that works there is really friendly. You can do your general shopping here and they have a decent beer and wine selection! It is the place every Mexican and Puerto Rican worth their sea salt shops for produce, meat and spices. There is a great butcher shop at Cermak, wonderful spices, endless produce (with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables favored by the Puerto Rican/Mexican community), and all the usual dry goods you would expect to find at a decent supermercado. The place to be for everything Puerto Rico without leaving New York. If you are curious or are familiar with Puerto Rican Products, culture and cuisine, this is the place for you. Located in Brooklyn, who knew that a shortcut to Puerto Rico existed right in our backyard.
You will find every thing you need here- from rare fruits and spices to Caribbean sauces and Asian noodles... the selections range from Latino (mexican, puerto rican, dominican, venezuelan, etc.) to Haitian and generic American groceries.
Essex Market is an indoor market with a bunch of vendors, some in stalls and some in the same open space. The Porto Rico stall while not as comprehensive as their other shops is still great for a fresh coffee and supplies.
